Pakse · Bolaven Plateau gateway
From Pakse to the Bolaven Plateau, Tad Lo is an easy place to make your base
Pakse is the main gateway to the Bolaven Plateau, and Tad Lo is straightforward to reach by local transport, motorbike or private vehicle. Instead of treating the village as a transit stop, stay one, two or three nights and use it for waterfalls, coffee, workshops, walks and local experiences.
Local bus or songthaew from Pakse
Go to Pakse Southern Bus Station, commonly called the Km 8 terminal, and ask for a vehicle toward Salavan that can drop you at the Tad Lo junction on Route 20. Allow roughly 2 to 3 hours including stops and waiting. As an indicative budget, plan around 150,000 kip per person for the main ride and confirm the fare before boarding.
- At the station, say: ຂ້ອຍຢາກໄປຕາດເລາະ (I want to go to Tad Lo).
- For the junction, say: ຂໍລົງທາງແຍກຕາດເລາະ (Please drop me at the Tad Lo junction).
- From the Route 20 junction, arrange a village pickup or walk about 2 km. Confirm the pickup price first; a useful local reference is around 25,000 kip per person.
By motorbike on the Bolaven Loop
A motorbike offers the most independence for waterfalls and coffee stops, but road conditions, rain, visibility and riding experience matter more than the distance alone.
- Leave Pakse with enough daylight.
- Check tyres, brakes, lights and rain protection before departure.
- Download or screenshot essential directions before losing signal.
By car, driver or organized transfer
This is the simplest option with luggage, children or limited time. Confirm the exact destination, whether waiting time is included and where the driver will leave you in Tad Lo.
From the market junction to Tad Lo centre
The bus normally drops passengers at the junction near Tad Lo market, about 1.5 km from the village centre. You can continue on foot; in high season, a tuk-tuk may be available at or near the junction.
Returning from Tad Lo to Pakse
For the return to Pakse, board at the junction near Tad Lo market. Buses generally pass at around 09:00, 11:00, 13:00 and 16:00, with an indicative fare of approximately 150,000 kip per person.
- Reach the junction early because local schedules are approximate.
- Use the same market junction where buses from Pakse normally drop passengers.
- Confirm the departure time and fare locally on the day of travel.
